In Memoriam

Glenn R. Swalm

A Lancer out of sight
Never out of mind

We regret to inform all of the Alumni and the class of

1967 that Glenn Robert Swalm died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Albany Medical Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Eve Kennedy.

Born August 12, 1949 in Plainfield, NJ, he was the son of Robert and Thelma (Westberg) Swalm. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Central Missouri State University. After an initial career in the steel industry, he was Environmental Health and Safety Manager for General Electric in the Schenectady and Fort Edward plants.

Incredibly diverse, Glenn had a multitude of talents and interests. Upon retirement, he became a docent/guide at The Bennington Museum and delighted in teaching children about local Vermont history. He also worked part-time at the Saratoga National Battlefield as a Volunteer Park Ranger. He was a member of the Town of Hoosick Lions Club, having served as Secretary and participating in food delivery services. In addition, Glenn also mentored at-risk children.

He had a vast range of knowledge in a staggering amount of topics and fields. Glenn was meticulous in all things -- be it his scientific research, a summer sailing trip, a hilarious gag, or even the small private idiosyncrasies of his life.

An avid catamaran sailor, Glenn introduced the love of it to his children in their early lives. He was a devoted fly fisherman and built individual rods for family and friends. Glenn was a lover of model trains and was especially fond of the culinary arts, with his own vast and constantly growing collection of recipes that he would happily prepare for others or pass on to anyone interested.

Along with his wife Eve, he is survived by his children, Adriane Swalm Durey (Lincoln) of Atlanta, GA and Guy Swalm of New Orleans, LA; as well as two step-daughters, Vanessa Rosenberg (James Thompson) of Bennington VT and Maria Perillo (Jason) of Saratoga, NY. He also leaves behind his sister Maryellen Lemons (Phil) of Waynesboro, VA; as well as five grandsons.

Martin Eugene Maples, 63
Martin Eugene Maples, 63, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday Dec. 8, 2012.
Survivors include his wife, partner, and main squeeze of 36 years, Sarah A. Liddle, of Shawsville, Va.
He was the son of Bobbie Maples and the late Charles Maples of Lexington, Ky. He was born Sept. 12, 1949 into the life of a military family and all that that encompassed.
He always had an encouraging word if you were down, helpful advice if you needed it, and a warm and welcoming smile.
Because of the suddenness of Martin's passing, a celebration of a life well lived, will be planned for spring 2013.
Sarah requests that contributions be made to one of these organizations: The Central VA Post Polio Support Group, 14606 Talleywood Ct, Chester, Va. 23831; The Blue Ridge Music Makers Guild, 7197 Floyd Hwy S., Willis, Va. 24380-4025, of which Martin was a founding member; or the Shawsville Ministerial Association Food Pantry, P.O. Box 248, Shawsville, Va. 24162, where he volunteered.
We miss him terribly, and the world is much diminished without him.
As his journal entry from April 30, 2012 states, "We do have to continue in faith, patience and grace."
