Paul Andrew Baker

In Memoriam

A Lancer out of sight
Never out of mind

We are sorry to inform the Lee community that Paul Baker, class of 1988, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

Paul was born in Arlington and grew up in Springfield. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1988. As part of a magnet program, though, he spent his senior year at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. A National Merit Scholar, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1993, a master of fine arts degree in fiction from the University of Virginia in 2001 and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago in 2005.

He taught English in Japan for two years and at a private academy outside Winston-Salem, N.C. He worked as a paralegal in New York and the District before returning to the Washington area in 2006.

Primarily a short-story writer whose work appeared in the Literary Review, he had completed a manuscript for a novel at the time of his death. He enjoyed reading, music, travel and city life.

Survivors include his parents, Janice Baker and Robert Baker of Prescott, Ariz.; and a sister, Sarah Baker of Los Angeles.
